Windows 10 20H1 build 18898 rolls out to Fast ring Insiders

What you need to know

  • Windows 10 20H1 build 18898 is now available for Fast ring Insiders.
  • In the build, a function is added to display disk types on the Task Manager tab.
  • The usual mish-mash of bug fixes and known issues also apply here.

Microsoft pushed another new Windows 10 20H1 preview build for Fast ring Insiders today. By pushing the build number to 18898, the latest release includes the ability to view disk types on the Task Manager tab. There are also a handful of bug fixes in this build, along with a number of known issues.

What's new

  • Disk type now visible on the Task Manager tab: A small but perhaps useful change: you can now view the disk type (for example, SSD) for each disk listed on the Task Manager performance tab. This is particularly useful in cases where you have listed multiple disks, so that you can distinguish between them.

General changes, improvements and solutions for PC

  • We fixed an issue that resulted in a high DWM crash in recent builds.
  • We fixed a problem with pcshell.dll in recent builds, which resulted in a high crash of explorer.exe.
  • We have resolved an issue where the updated Japanese IME settings would never be applied to certain desktop bridge apps, which could result in candidates being shown for prediction even after being disabled in the IME settings. For those who have already suffered this, you must reset the Settings> Apps> app

Known issues

  • There has been a problem with older versions of anti-cheat software used with games that may crash after updating the latest 19H1 Insider Preview build PCs. We work with partners to get their software updated with a solution and most games have released patches to prevent PCs from experiencing this problem. To reduce the chance that you will encounter this problem, make sure you use the latest version of your games before attempting to update the operating system. We are also working with anti-cheat and game developers to resolve similar issues that may arise with the 20H1 Insider Preview builds and will work to minimize the likelihood of these issues in the future.
  • Some Realtek SD card readers do not work correctly. We are investigating the problem.
  • If you use a remote desktop to connect to an improved session VM, the taskbar search results will not be visible (only a dark area) until you restart searchui.exe.
  • We are investigating reports that on certain devices, if fast startup is enabled, the night light will not turn on until after a restart. (Note: the problem will occur with a "cold" restart or disable / enable. If you want to look around if the night light is not turned on, use Start> On / Off> Restart.)
  • There is a noticeable delay in dragging the emoji and dictation panels.
  • Tamper protection may have been disabled in Windows Security after updating this build. You can switch it on again.
  • Some functions in the Start menu and in All apps are not located in languages such as FR-FR, RU-RU and ZH-CN.
  • In the accessibility settings, selecting a color filter may have no effect unless the color filter option is disabled and then enabled again.
  • The IME candidate window for East Asian IMEs (Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Japanese IME) sometimes does not open. We are investigating the problem. In the meantime, if you go to Task Manager and close the "WindowsInternal.ComposableShell.Experiences.TextInput.InputApp.exe" task on the Details tab, unblock it if you encounter this problem.
  • We are aware of a problem with the Bopomofo IME in which the character width is suddenly changed to Full width from Half width and investigations.
  • If you install builds from the Fast ring and switch to the Slow ring or the Release Preview ring, optional content such as enabling developer mode will fail. You must remain in the Fast ring to add / install / enable optional content. This is because optional content is only installed on builds that are approved for specific rings.

As usual, you can find the full details on the Windows Blog. Otherwise Fast ring Insiders can now record 18898 via Windows Update.
